The Alchemist - Incidental Tarot

The Scientific Method In Everyday Practice

Picture
The Alchemist from The Incidental Tarot would be comparable to The Knight of Swords in other tarot decks. I really love how thoughtful this Knight of Quills (Swords) is. While Pages are usually about the start and intention of ideas, Knights bring those ideas into action. This knight is a student but he or she also can be a teacher or a mentor. In some respects this card reminds me of the magician, but a magician who is still experimenting and honing skills. He or she has a great passion for learning and discovery which can be a bit magnetic. It’s evident as he holds up the flask, that he is examining it carefully and is meticulously recording his observations. The Knight of Swords is often a person who is wonderful at explaining things and will take up someone else's cause who is less articulate.

As Holly DeFount, the creator of the deck says:

“He has the sharp mind of a scientist, the psyche of a great philosopher and the passion of an adept of the magical arts. The Alchemist has the ability to co-create his reality with the elemental forces of the physical world and the ethereal forces of his own mind. His passion for understanding the universe in all its manifestations is captivating, and he often gathers quite a following of those who are enthralled with his work. With an analytical yet open mind, the Alchemist can make connections and discover answers that otherwise would remain untapped. They will have a great love for books, a passion for all kinds of learning and the power to shift the consciousness of those they whose lives they touch.”

Of course the downside is that the Alchemist can also be a tendency towards being an argumentative smarty-pants and a ‘splainer who knows everything and is always right, even to the point of being abusive. I would say, that The Alchemist Reversed would easily represent the leader of the bay area coven turned cult I left several years ago who is now being investigated for her actions, while the members and founders, at least in the beginning, carried the positive traits of the enthusiastic young Alchemist, seeking knowledge and magic and wanting to share it, make the world a better place.

It’s so important even in our excitement over knowledge and exploration that we not let it go to our heads. Instead, if we take our time, observe objectively, communicate clearly and listen closely to others we can have a positive impact on those around us. Though I made mistakes, that approach overall,  was what kept me from being sucked under the influence of Jessica “Rabbit” Mathews whose horse was so high that she felt entitled to crown herself “Yeshe” and “Reverend Mother.”  I’m on my way to PantheaCon, the Pagan convention in San Jose, California this weekend. There will be many Alchemists there displaying the higher and lower attributes of the card!

But that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? It’s a journey of discovery. Sometimes we muck it up. Sometimes we follow the junk science down a delusional rabbit hole and get stuck at the bottom thinking we’re on the top and sometimes we discover real answers and make genuine connections. There’s a lot to learn from this card!

Be the Alchemist you want to see in the world!

Queen of Swords - Secret Tarot

Sorrow Can Be Sticky

Picture
First, I want to say, I’m so excited. I finally got my full sized Secret Tarot deck and it is gorgeous! This is my first draw from it! Interesting thing to note is that this card from this same deck came up earlier this month on Thursday, January 11th.

What immediately strikes me today is how her shadow is almost part of her. Also, how the tip of her sword is pressed into the floor as she leans on it ever so slightly. She stands tall and yet relaxed. Her eyes closed as she refuses to be influenced by anything going on around her. This is a vote of confidence in your decision making. Don’t allow yourself to be distracted and clarity will come. Go with your gut. Be clear about communicating what you want.

And remember, with the light of clarity comes the depth of shadow also. The truth contains both dark and light.

One of the things I was happy about is with this deck, I was also able to get the booklet which comes with it. It is still spare as far as interpretations, but what is interesting is that Nizoli has basically told his own story with this deck. The swords suit represents the Kingdom of Sorrow so this card may also serve as a reminder that it is all too easy to become trapped in a state of sorrow and depression and a caution against forgetting that this is a temporary suspension and that one must find a way cut through it to resume life,  find happiness and movement.

Universal  Waite Tarot -  Queen of Pentacles

"Management is about arranging and telling. Leadership is about nurturing and enhancing." Tom Peters

Picture
It's really funny, Everytime I look at the Queen of Pentacles from this deck she has a different expression on her face. Sometimes she looks tired from doing all the things and taking care of all the people. Sometimes it feels like she is looking down at that big coin on her lap with loving compassion. Sometimes I think she's side-eyeing the bunny rabbit and thinking, “Oh no you don't! I have enough children.”
When you have a Queen of Pentacles person in your life you are indeed blessed. She makes everyone feel  as if they have a mother they can go . She's a natural at nurture. She's also one of those down-to-earth practical people who knows how to stretch a dime and make the most of whatever she has. She knows how to make any place into a home. She's a good money manager even when she doesn't have a lot to work with. And the crazy thing is she seems to juggle work home and being amazing without breaking a sweat.

When the Queen of Pentacles has gone awry she is completely out of balance. She doesn’t nurture so much as she smothers. She focuses on her work so much that she neglects her family. Her priorities get completely out of whack and she will find herself sitting in the dark because she bought a pair of shoes on impulse instead of paying the utility bill.

Which Queen do you embody? Do you have a person like this in your life that you can rely on? If so, you would do well to make them an ally and let them know how grateful you are! The Queen of Pentacles can also be a reminder that miraculous multitasking can be accomplished, but only if you have the right balance in your life. She invites you to stop a moment, sitting on your own throne to enjoy the beauty around you and the fruits of your labor. Find your equilibrium. You’ve got this!

The Baseball Tarot - MVP of Bats: Accomplishments of Action

Congratulations! You did it!

Picture
The Baseball Tarot, another out-of-print tarot deck; I have a lot of them, is really quite marvelous. In this case, the MVP takes the place of the king court card. It's interesting to note that this deck has a mix of age, gender, experience and ethnicity among the cards. So the MVP can be anyone. In this case the MVP is portrayed as a young girl.

She is happy and confident as she holds her trophy in the shape of a bat up,  presumably for the cameras. She has been recognized for her accomplishments and skill by her peers. Bats in this case represent the same things that wands do in other decks, fiery action and energy.

To reach the MVP status one has learned to harness this energy and use it effectively! They are an inspirational leader AND an excellent team player. The MVP knows that true success is the result of teamwork. They know that even when they shine it doesn't happen without the contribution of others.

Who inspires you? Do you inspire others to be their best selves? Are you using all your skills? Perhaps it's time to give yourself credit for what you bring to the situation. Now is the time to relish in your accomplishments and also to express gratitude for those who helped you get there. It may be that you are about to receive an award or accolade for work well done. Perhaps you are about to graduate with a degree or be certified in a program that you have worked hard to master.

I think it's also important to look at the confident girl on this card as a reminder that even with obstacles, no one else can really stop you from being your best self and no one else gets to assess your value. People may try to hold you back with their doubts or even with ageist, sexist, racist, ableist or other bigoted comments, but don't listen. You know the strengths, experience, perspectives, enthusiasm and unique talents you possess that ultimately, will  make you an MVP in life.

The Page of Swords - New Palladini Tarot

Use Your Words!

Picture
I had such an awful, intense day yesterday. By the end of it I literally felt  like that  Knight of Fire had trampled me and burned me to a crisp. The day seemed like it would never end. I finally fell asleep around 730 this morning. Three cups of coffee and I was still dragging and groggy headed. I drew the Page of Swords for you today. In my head I  knew what I wanted to say about it but my head fought verbal articulation and my cat wanted to be in the middle of my cards, my keyboard and my lap. My cat always wins! She is after all, a tortoiseshell.

The irony of this is not lost on me since the Page of Swords is all about communication. *head desk* So, I'm just going to say, don't be like yesterday's Knight of Swords! (though you may be able to use his energy to get things done) Today is a day to use your words, people! Communicate! Negotiate! And do the thing!

I like the earnestness in this Page of Swords face. I also appreciate the androgyny of this page. I like that openness to interpretation. Many of the cards in the New Palladini Tarot are drawn this way. I also think it’s interesting that instead of a blue sky and windswept clouds this card shows a night sky and the page’s sword appears to pierce the crescent moon as if to transition from dreams to action. The expression is thoughtful and determined.

The Page of Swords, in the ideal, is very good at communication. They (or you) have an active mind and a lot of energy to get things started. The downside can be a tendency to talk too much without following through. There's a lot of idealism and enthusiasm at the start of every project. So go ahead and put those wheels in motion but make sure you also put things in place to push yourself to keep up with your goal.

Knight of Wands (Fire)
Aleister Crowley Thoth Deck

Picture
Everytime I see a card from the fire suit of the of the Thoth deck, “Let Me Stand Next to Your Fire” starts to play in my head. In the case of the Knight of Fire, I'm not so sure I want to stand too close!

This Knight has so much intense energy! His sword is nearly a club of flame, his cape is an inferno, his beard is fire, fire even spews from under his helmet, his horse has fire in place of a mane or tail! His horse is leaping into battle, rearing up but the night has a tight grip on the reins.

On one hand, you have tremendous creative force and energy, a burst of inspiration, quick generosity. On the other, you have a fierce temper, impulsiveness, a tendency to overreact and to try tightly control everything.

Here, you have the best and the worst of extremes! The energy of fire can seem boundless, but without the other elements to temper or fuel it, fire can be destructive or flash and go out quickly!

This card can represent the force and energy needed to get a project moving. The Knight gets you off your duff, out of the dream and into action,  but he doesn't think things through to the long term or see the consequences of charging in. He is aggressive, has too much hubris and ambition, and can't stand challenges or criticism. The knight can represent these traits in you or someone close to you. He may represent a sudden or urgent situation in your life that you need to pay attention to at once! An unexpected  change may take you by surprise.

Some important things to remember when this knight comes charging into your life:

Don't procrastinate, give whatever he drops in your lap the attention it deserves. Deal with it promptly!

Make sure to temper the knights enthusiasm with balanced planning. What are the consequences of this action near and long term? How can this energy and creativity be maintained? Calculate your risks!

If you hit an obstacle or a slow down, remember to breathe. Don't waste energy fuming. Think it through.

Try to listen to criticism as constructive. Don't take it personally. Take it as a positive challenge to be more effective.

Remind yourself that you can't control everything!

Queen of Swords - Secret Tarot

Sorry I missed you yesterday. I needed to take a day off. It was a crazy day and I was kind of sick on top of it.

The Queen of Swords, or any court card can signify a person with these traits, you should keep that in mind, however, it also reminds you of these traits in yourself. The Queen of Swords reminds you to keep your mind sharp. She reminds you that your first instinct is almost always the right one. She reminds you to be discerning without being too harsh and judgmental. She reminds you to be independent without being cold.

If there's something you need to make a decision about, go with your gut. Don't let emotions sway you. If there is someone you feel you can't trust, or you suspect isn't your friend, listen to that. Stick to what you know. Consider logic and fact first. The same advice follows if you are dealing with a person like this. Don't try to appeal to a logical person with an emotional argument. Take a step back and approach the conversation as clearly and concisely as possible.

There are a few things in this particular card I think are really interesting. The queen is completely relaxed and unaffected by her surroundings. Her eyes are closed so that she is not distracted, and can focus on her thoughts. In this version of the Queen of Swords she is also not wearing her crown. The symbol is above her throne. and she is standing. to me this says she does not need the throne or the crown to know that her decisions are sovereign. She doesn't need her ego reinforced. Flattery and glitter are not going to work on her. She knows who she is. The figures carved into the throne or interesting to me too. They are naked and sensual, but not overtly sexual. Their eyes are also closed and they have postures of submission. Again, I lament that Nizzoli did not do a companion book to give us all the little tidbits about the symbolism.

Queen of Cups - Secret Tarot

Wednesday, January 3rd , 2018

Good Evening (imagine I said that all drawn out like, Alfred Hitchcock.)

It's raining here in Oakland. it was raining the same day last year too. It's really lovely. Today was one of those days where I woke up and had to get out the door as quickly as possible because I had back-to-back appointments all day long. I didn't have time to do a card draw before I left, but I did throw my tiny Secret Tarot in my bag on the way out the door in hopes that at some point I would be able to sit and shuffle and draw. I wasn't able to do it until my last appointment ended. I'm attaching a photo that I got off Pinterest because it's too dark in my car to photograph it.

When it gets late in the day, I always debate whether I should bother doing a card and posting it but I'm going to take a cue from my philosophy of "Perfect Timing" which is when I feel an urge to draw the card or I have time to draw the card that is the perfect time to give you the message. In other words you didn't actually need this to get through your whole day. Now is the perfect time.

Today's card, is the Queen of Cups from The Secret Tarot. As is usually the case with court cards, the card can represent you, a person close to you or who is about to come into your life, or the general attributes of the card.

The Queen of Cups is relaxed supported by a solid throne with a calm sea behind her. She represents creativity, imagination, nurturing spirit, balanced emotions, intuition and often love.
Queen of Cups people tend to think with their heart rather than being cold and analytical. (She wasn't reversed, but full picture here) The downside of this can be making impulsive decisions, being too passive, getting distracted, being out of touch with your emotions, unstable, fantasizing too much and even substance abuse.

What attributes does the Queen of Cups invite you to bring to your life? Are you or someone you care about indulging in the less productive behaviors that an emotional creative person may fall into?

Who around you is a Queen of Cups you can rely on? Perhaps the Queen of Cups is drawing love to your life and a new relationship is coming. Is she telling you to listen to your inner voice, take a different view, start that creative venture you have been putting off, open yourself to a new relationship?

As an aside, one of my appointments today was with my therapist. He actually asked me to bring some tarot cards next time. We've had a couple of interesting conversations about this. At the end of our session today he showed me a really cool deck that someone had gifted him.

It was done as a benefit for Asian American mental health. It is an absolutely stunning deck! The imagery is really interesting. Some of it is obviously very traditional but there are some cards they have just come up with that are extraordinary. The definitions of the cards are on the backs and are quite in depth.

Anyway it was done as a Kickstarter, but the decks are also for sale in various kits so I thought I would give you the link. I've put this on my own want list because it's so wonderful.

King of Cups / Poseidon   Animals Divine Tarot.

Well, first, *swoon* Look out Jason Mamoa! (Maybe older, wiser silver fox Jason Mamoa) Here is a guy who has got it all going on. He is in tune with his surroundings, his emotions and his higher self. Everything is in balance. He took the time and effort to get that way. He is both a good communicator and listener. he is admired and supported by all those around him. He might be a mentor, a boss or a father figure. He is also a wealth of fertility.

Nobody's perfect.

The flip side to this is emotions occasionally storming. There is capacity for quite a temper here and also allowing oneself to get distracted and out of balance.

If you are in a position of power, try to tap into the best skills of Poseidon. Don't isolate yourself. Communicate with and consider others when you make important decisions. Be compassionate.

If you are having trouble with your emotions this is a good time to learn to meditate. Find a trusted friend who has your back, like the dolphin in the card, and talk it out. Learn to find stillness and balance in the water that is constantly changing around you.

I encourage you to take a good look at the card and all the details in it and see if anything resonates with you. There are so many different types of sea life in the picture. It may be that you are drawn to or identify with one of them. Today, I identify with the octopus peering out of the right hand lower corner. I'm moving slow, waving my arm gently in the water, testing the current. I'm trying to decide if I want to move out and about or curl back up in my niche for a nap. I'm also all about the star light reflecting all over the dolphin at the top.
