You can stand me up at the gates of hell
But I won't back down....

Seven of Wands - Shadowscapes Tarot

Picture
Well now. I got very little sleep last night, about two hours.  Had to wake early because I had to move my car to avoid the dreaded street sweeping ticket. The street sweeper usually doesn’t show up until 10:30 or 11 AM but Satan’s Minions show up promptly and give no quarter. I was also rushing off to a blood test that didn’t happen AGAIN! Third time I have been rescheduled. But, I am now happily ensconced at Rasa Cafe, enjoying a teeny stuffed croissant and a decadent rose latte and I am ready to lay it on ya! Happy Tuesday!

Today, I am shuffling the gorgeous Shadowscapes Tarot by Stephanie Pui-Mun Law. I was first introduced to this deck by my former co conspirator, Molly, who read with this deck regularly. I cannot count the number of times this card would come up for me in readings she did for me. (When I read for her, the 7 of wheels in the Buckland Romani deck was the card that would consistently pop up and say, “MESSAGE!”) Maybe this card is just taunting me for old times sake, but I think we can all identify!

On the card, a mother fox is protecting her kits. They huddle behind her as she faces off against a badger that is twice her size. They are fenced in, like boxers in a ring by bamboo staves. The two creatures are positioned like Yin and Yang and a circle of energy emanates from the center. They circle each other but do not actually fight. She stands her ground! Pui-Mun Law, states that she chose bamboo for the wands because it is strong, but supple. It bends in the winds and does not break.

Are you drawn to the fox in this card? Do you feel you have a position to defend? This card may be telling you to stand your ground! Embrace the fierce protective instincts of motherhood. That badger in your life will respect you if you show your strength,  bend but do not break. The badger is only dangerous if he sees that you are afraid.  If you have a friend who is a mama fox will protect and defend you. You can count on her to intercede on your behalf!

If your eye goes straight to the badger, be wary of being too aggressive or domineering. Are you being a bully? Do you know a badger? Do you have a friend, boss or partner with a hair trigger? A scary poser who threatens but may not follow through, perhaps?

How can you find a balance with this yin yang counter so you don’t spend all day in an angry stalemate? Can you find flexibility and compromise for the greater good?

The Tortured Witch (Bad Witch I)
Good Witch / Bad Witch Cards

GOOD WITCH? BAD WITCH?
DON'T TORTURE YOURSELF!

Picture
Let me introduce you today too, Gillian Kemp’s Good Witch, Bad Witch cards. This is a wonderful little deck, that for all of its cuteness is really insightful. There are 52 cards, one for each week of the year. Half of them are good witch cards and the other half are bad witch cards, representing two parts of our experience and nature. Each card has an accompanying spell. I have to say, what was initially a whimsical purchase has become one of my favorite decks in my collection. Never underestimate the power of something just because it is cute.
Today's card is the first card in the bad which section of the deck. It's called the tortured witch.

We've all felt like this before. Someone is breaking our heart. They may be a cheater. They may have a substance abuse problem. They made lie to us constantly. They may just simply, not love us anymore. Maybe they died. Because of our love for the other person, or perhaps our fear of being alone, or a myriad of other reasons that play on her emotions, we do not want to let go even when we know we should. We end up in a bargaining stage. If only I could get through to them, touch their heart, make them love me. If only I had done something different. If only I could change they might change. But it never gets us anywhere. We feel like we are going to die without the other person in our lives. The conflict between our Broken Heart and our pride are sorrow and our strength, resolve and devastation has us in turmoil.

Sometimes we are willing to suffer a situation even though we shouldn't because we think the pain of loss will be worse than the pain of enduring it. Sometimes a choice comes up and neither course of action feels good. Well it's true that the person who has harmed you may come to realize how important you are to them in time it may not be worth the wait. More likely, they will discover this after you have moved on

We can't go back. We can't take the stripes off the tiger. But what we can do is learn to accept things as they are. We can look for positive ways to comfort ourselves. We can know that things will get better, naturally on their own. If we decide to stick things out, at least we can be honest with ourselves about the realities of the situation.

*This particular card includes a simple spell to stop a Partners illicit affair. I won't include it here. I should definitely write a post on tarot spells one of these days.

Owl - Medicine Cards

Picture
The text that Carson and Sams wrote for the medicine cards is so wonderfully thought out and researched that it's one of the few times that I feel it is crucial to refer to when pulling these cards.

The owl is an archetype for wisdom and truth and a messenger from the night. This symbolism crosses culture, An owl can see in the dark. The owl is here to help you hone your perception. Owl reminds you not to allow others to deceive you and not to deceive yourself.

If you know someone with owl medicine they are that person who cannot be fooled. They are that person who unsettles others by knowing more than they could possibly know about the other person even though they just met!

"If you have pulled the Owl card, you are being asked to use your powers of keen, silent observation to intuit some life situation. Owl is befriending you and aiding you in seeing the total truth. Owl can bring you messages in the night through dreams or meditation. Pay attention to the signals and omens. The truth always brings further enlightenment. "

Have a perceptive day. Let your intuition and observation guide you when things seem murky and dark

Queen of Swords - Secret Tarot

Sorry I missed you yesterday. I needed to take a day off. It was a crazy day and I was kind of sick on top of it.

The Queen of Swords, or any court card can signify a person with these traits, you should keep that in mind, however, it also reminds you of these traits in yourself. The Queen of Swords reminds you to keep your mind sharp. She reminds you that your first instinct is almost always the right one. She reminds you to be discerning without being too harsh and judgmental. She reminds you to be independent without being cold.

If there's something you need to make a decision about, go with your gut. Don't let emotions sway you. If there is someone you feel you can't trust, or you suspect isn't your friend, listen to that. Stick to what you know. Consider logic and fact first. The same advice follows if you are dealing with a person like this. Don't try to appeal to a logical person with an emotional argument. Take a step back and approach the conversation as clearly and concisely as possible.

There are a few things in this particular card I think are really interesting. The queen is completely relaxed and unaffected by her surroundings. Her eyes are closed so that she is not distracted, and can focus on her thoughts. In this version of the Queen of Swords she is also not wearing her crown. The symbol is above her throne. and she is standing. to me this says she does not need the throne or the crown to know that her decisions are sovereign. She doesn't need her ego reinforced. Flattery and glitter are not going to work on her. She knows who she is. The figures carved into the throne or interesting to me too. They are naked and sensual, but not overtly sexual. Their eyes are also closed and they have postures of submission. Again, I lament that Nizzoli did not do a companion book to give us all the little tidbits about the symbolism.

Five of Wheels (Pentacles) -
Buckland Romani Tarot

This card came up from a different deck on Saturday, January 6th so I'll refer you to that post for basic meanings, but I have a couple of interesting things to note today:
  • First, this is the second time the card has come up in a couple of days
  • Someone else has been drawing this card constantly
  • I actually got up early this morning and drew the card but didn't have time to do a write up before my appointment started.
  • The kicker is this evening when things finally calmed down and I decided to do another draw, I shuffled my deck really, really, really well and guess which card came up? The same one, five of Pentacles.
  • This tells me that this message is one that's really trying to get through and probably to more than just one person!

So, let's talk about this particular five of Pentacles because it's a little different than some decks and I think it's really interesting. Instead of people out in the snow we instead have a woman and her two children begging in front of the church. The woman in particular is wearing tattered, faded and clothes that have been mended many times over. She and the girl to her left are looking directly at you, in a plea for sympathy. A bowl is in front of her and she hopes he will put some money in it. However, the girl to her left (your right) is smiling and looks as if she is about to laugh. Despite the hole in her shoe, which she is almost pointing to, she seems to look as if this might be a game. It is entirely possible, that this Romani family begging in front of the church doesn't really need to be begging or are not in the state of despair that they seem. This could be how they're making their money, or supplementing their income.

They are leaning against a very substantial building, a church. When you think of churches you think of charity, spiritual and sometimes physical support. The window has shutters and they are open to let in the light and to show that people are welcome to come in. The wheels in the window are like warm, golden suns. The sky is blue. It's a sunny beautiful day out. The grass is green. These are all elements of hope.

You have several levels to look at here. You can look at it from the position of being affected by poverty (financial, spiritual, health, isolation) and help that you may not see is at hand. Or you can look at it as telling a story of that poverty and refusing to see other options. Or finding a benefit from allowing others to see you as being impoverished in some way.

One of the things I always say, is who do you identify with in the card? What do you feel drawn to? And I think what is really important about this card is it's asking you to examine, what are the stories you are telling yourself and others your financial situation, health, spiritual lack or whatever type of poverty or bad luck you may feel you possess? Are they useful? Are they true? Are you ignoring solutions or are you turning down help? Have you become so invested in wrestling with obstacles that you can't see the solution at hand for getting around through or over them? What is your relationship to money? What is your relationship to success? What are you afraid of when it comes to your spiritual growth? Again, what stories are you telling yourself and others? And what stories are you allowing other people to tell you about these things? Which do you choose despair or hope?

Three of Cups - Secret Tarot

The traditional image for this card is three maidens dancing and lifting their cups. Here we have three men in a tavern raising their cups in a toast. there is the impression that they have come to some agreement to work together.

The Three of Cups is a good prompt but now is a time to be social, to celebrate with others and forget your cares, to come together with other people with shared interests to reach a common goal, and that creative projects will be more successful with partners.

As usual, I invite you to look carefully at the image and see if you are drawn to any particular character here and to consider what more he might have to tell you. One looks quite enebriated as if he might fall asleep mid toast, one seems quite earnest, the other has a jovial expression and looks quite pleased with himself. All three men seem to be different ages and social status. One of them smokes a pipe. You might ask if this means something to you or represents you or someone in your life. They sit in a high backed booth perhaps for privacy or maybe it is just a shield from the outside cares of the world.

If you get a chance to be social, to celebrate or collaborate, say yes.

PS: I will pull out some other decks soon but right now MS is kicking my ass. I was doing an organizing project before Christmas and the boxes with my collection are behind a bunch of other items. Also, I'm going to be working away from home several days this week so I will probably just have a couple of decks with me.

Ace of Pentacles - The Secret Tarot

Today was another absolutely nutty day and I have finally gotten a break at nearly 7 p.m. PST, but I do have my tiny purse size tarot card deck, the Secret Tarot, so I drew a card and it's a good one for all of us!

Today's message from the cards is the Ace of Pentacles. Again I'm going to look and see if I can get a picture off the web because it's really dark in my car.

Aces of course, represent new energy and new beginings. and the hand coming out of a cloud holding this huge golden coin, represents possibly a surprise or unexpected of money or just a influx of energy that will help you with your endeavors. The hand reaches out to give you what you need whether that's an influx of cash, a new idea, a learning opportunity, a new surge of energy or inspiration. Here it is being gifted to you!

Keep an eye out for new investment opportunities, or someone willing to invest in you and your ideas. If you've been thinking about starting a new business or furthering your education this is a good signal that you are on the right track. It is also possible that you are going to get an inheritance, a gift of money, unexpected work, or a surprise increase in income. You may just find yourself feeling more optimistic about putting energy into things that may pay off financially! Run with that!

If you have ideas that are just starting to form about things that you're excited about, start making plans. Lay out the direction you want to go and what it will take to get you there. If you've been trying to achieve a goal or get a project off the ground but it just hasn't been working, now is the timer to mix things up. Look at the way you been doing things and try something completely different and you'll find things start rolling again.

Keep it positive. Remember that what you put out in the universe comes back to you. The world is full of wonderful gifts.

*A little note. This ace is similar yet, a little different from the classic Rider Waite image in that it has a castle in the landscape. Your home is your castle. I'm thinking this is a nice nudge. If you are wanting to buy, did home improvements, major repairs, etc this is a good time to start. If you are trying to get an equity loan or financing for a home or improvements, you're probably going to get it. You may be getting money from a rental or home sale, inheritance etc.

January 1st 2018

I'm not going to post very much about this because I think it's rather obvious. Also, my cat just started off the new year by peeing on my bed while I slept in it, so I have to deal with that now. :-(

Consequently, I'm reasoning that if a bird crapping on you is supposed to be good luck, a cat soaking your bed with pee on New Year's Day must be particularly auspicious, especially if she is a tortoiseshell cat. May you all get blessed today in a more pleasant way!

Anyway, Our Card:

The Three of Wands from The Secret Tarot

This is absolutely the perfect card to come up for the first day of the new year. I think even a baby tarot reader will know what it's all about just by looking at the imagery. We are all looking out at the year stretched before us. It's expansive and unknown, but we still have ideas about what where we want to go. It's a time to make plans, changes, look for new opportunities and consider travel. Like the ocean in the card, there's no reason not to go big with these things.

It's also a reminder as we look ahead that things take time and consideration. and we're not going to accomplish all our goals all at once. If there were things that you wanted to complete in 2017, but got stuck, reassess and refocus. Break things into smaller pieces and make long term plans!
