The Hierophant

The Smith-Waite Centennial Tarot

Picture
Everytime I look at this card I cannot help but think of Cartman from South Park saying, “Respect my authoritaaah!” In most decks, the Hierophant is an illustration of the Pope, who for Catholics is revered as the one to look to for spiritual guidance, blessings and knowledge.

Smith has illustrated his holiness in full regalia. With one hand he gives a blessing and with the other he holds a triple cross.  Two students kneel before him in reverence to receive his blessing and teachings. At his feet are the keys to heaven.

So the thing to ask yourself is does this card represent a figure or an institution in your life that you see as a higher authority or does it represent a position that you are moving into? The Hierophant can symbolize a spiritual Institution or spiritual education and what that means to you personally. It represents more of a sanctioned holiness than a personal spirituality. But it can also represent your own study and accumulation of spiritual knowledge as well as any kind of official seal of approval. Perhaps you just got married, earned your PhD or are publishing a book.
Picture
Another thing that the Popish Hierophant always brings to mind is the risk of playing follow the leader, without question, when it comes to spiritual issues. Or the risk a leader others look to for guidance may have to become, complacent, rigid and pompous. The mind, heart and soul deserve more consideration, I think. It doesn’t matter what the religion, when we accept what our ordained leaders and teachings say as the unassailable truth we put ourselves in danger. My post at the beginning of the month about  being in a cult is a good example. No one questioned the High Priestess whether out of fear or belief. Some even felt her divinity was a given. Some still do, even with all the carnage left in her wake. This is one of the cautions about organized religion. It is more dogma than darma. The Hierophant does not strictly represent dogmatic, authoritarian belief however. Some decks like The Buckland Romani Tarot represent more of a belief and respect for knowledge than a rigid system.

Picture
Instead of a religious icon, The Buckland Romani Tarot Hierophant is a Blacksmith.

"Working with fire and smoke to transform crude iron into tools and weapons, the blacksmith was held in awe in many cultures. His work in iron and bronze was so important that throughout the world the smith was regarded as a magician, a holy man."

"Iron itself has been regarded as near-magical in many cultures and is credited with supernatural powers. In many legends it is the smith who is the healer and the doctor, and it is he who teaches people how to use fire. The smith usually plays a leading role in magic and divination."

- Raymond Buckland

It's not a bad thing to want to learn from religious or spiritual leaders. Faith can be a marvelous gift. Critical thinking; sifting through what makes sense, checks out and weighing out its value is of utmost importance. Blind faith is what is expected of animals being herded into the chute for slaughter.

If I pull out the little vintage text that Waite wrote, it will give you a whole slew of potential meanings:

Divinatory Meanings: Marriage, Alliance, captivity, servitude, mercy and goodness, inspiration, the man to whom the Querent has recourse.

Reversed: Society, good understanding, concord, over-kindness, weakness.

Here are the Centennial and Universal Waite Hierophant images:

To Ponder:

Picture
Picture
How is it that hardly any major religion has looked at science and concluded, “This is better than we thought! The Universe is much bigger than our prophets said, grander, more subtle, more elegant?” Instead they say, “No, no, no! My god is a little god, and I want him to stay that way.” A religion, old or new, that stressed the magnificence of the Universe as revealed by modern science might be able to draw forth reserves of reverence and awe hardly tapped by the conventional faiths.

― Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space
“I have as much authority as the Pope. I just don’t have as many people who believe it.”
― George Carlin
“Spirituality is not adopting more beliefs and assumptions but uncovering the best in you.”
― Amit Ray, Beautify your Breath - Beautify your Life
When distant and unfamiliar and complex things are communicated to great masses of people, the truth suffers a considerable and often a radical distortion. The complex is made over into the simple, the hypothetical into the dogmatic, and the relative into an absolute. -----Walter Lippmann
Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.

0 The Fool -
Smith-Waite Centennial Tarot

Halloo everyone! I'm back. Did you miss me? I hope you did, just a little. This is not an April Fool's Joke. Really. It's me!

In honor of April 1st, since I'm starting a new journey with this blog, here is The Fool from the first deck we'll be looking at together, the Centennial edition of the Smith-Waite deck, commonly known as, The Rider or Rider Waite deck. As I saunter along examining the mysteries of symbolic art that can be held in one's palm, let's hope I can stay on the path and don't step off any cliffs!

I thought about starting this blog back up before April but I really did need the time away. I'm very excited about some decks I recently received and I can't wait to start sharing them with you!  The last couple of months I have been dealing with a combination of personal and health issues along with more commitments then I could handle.

I certainly had time to do a daily card draw, however, I did not have the time to diligently interpret and write about it every day. I could also have done a card draw only some of the days, but it would have been unpredictable and sporadic. It felt more sensible to take an actual planned hiatus and begin again when I could at least stick with it on a fairly regular basis.

Picture
March is always a difficult month for me. It is my birthday month and birthdays have been painful and traumatic experiences for much of my life. I've often had violent or unpleasant events associated with them and this goes all the way back to my childhood. March is also my brother's birthday month and the month in which he took his own life several years ago.

I AM A SURVIVOR OF CAYA COVEN
during the cult leadership of
Jessica "Yeshe Rabbit" Matthews

In addition to these painful milestones and the personal stress and health issues I am grappling with right now, information has finally come to light about a spiritual group that I used to belong to, CAYA (Come As You Are) Coven. Talk about stepping off a cliff! I think I made my way through the whole journey of The Fool during that time and when I finally I made it to to the end; Judgement and The World, I did have a clearer perspective on many things. Sometimes when things come into focus, they aren't pretty.

I left primarily because of gross abuses by the leader of the group: Jessica Matthews aka “Rabbit” Matthews aka Yeshe Rabbit aka Reverend Mother Matthews, and possibly using her husband's name, Robles. Now that everything has blown wide open and so many victims are coming forward, there is a lot more to deal with than the pain I had so neatly compartmentalized. What I did not know in the years after I left was how many other people besides myself, had been peeling away. When you left or were forced out, all your former friends, who you thought of as family, were discouraged from speaking to you. I was not aware that everything had come to a head with a huge, verbally abusive, transphobic rant last year, followed by a fracturing of the group and many revelations about Jessica's improprieties and lies. I am aware of approximately fifty victims and as is the case with any serial abuser, there are more who have not come forward. A private investigation was begun by the CAYA Council, however, given a “heads up” by an ally, and rather than face the charges against her, Matthews hastily resigned and fled the SF Bay Area.

Beware! She's Still Out There!

Picture
Matthews is now portraying herself as the victim and telling many false narratives, including saying that no one has presented her with the accusations. She got them alright but chose to leave rather than listen to them formally. She has systematically gaslighted and dismissed the people that she has abused. She is reframing things so that she can get support and new followers. She now has a revamped online presence with a “temple” and a Patreon. Her followers don't just prop up her ego, they support her financially. It is really scary to think that this clinically narcissistic, charlatan could potentially harm many more people.

There are a few well known people in the pagan community whom she has deceived that are vocally defending and supporting her. Many of these so called leaders are known TERFs (Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminists) which should tell you something about her. I suspect others only know her public face and have been taken in by her flattery. She still has her hooks in a few original members who are acting as puppets for her agenda. One of these is someone I used to consider my closest friend. Recently a respected pagan online publication, where she used to work and where she evidently still has plenty of allies, interviewed several victims and rather than use the details given to them,  essentially gave Matthews a platform while diminishing the victims' accounts. They say they had an independent editorial review for bias but it was very disappointing. When victims talked about their experiences in the comments, some of which the publication knew about but failed to include, supporters of Matthews were allowed to respond with abusive tirades and then the comments were suddenly closed.

* I have decided not to link the article at this time because I feel it was so biased and poorly written.

Even CAYA itself, which has lost the vast majority of its membership and is struggling to recover put out the mildest most, legally covering their collective asses, statement possible but it was enough to raise questions. You can read their statement HERE: CAYA COVEN PUBLIC STATEMENT

I was heartened when several respected pagan groups: Solar Cross Temple, Strong Roots and Wide Branches, Coru Cathubodua Priesthood and Black Rose Witchcraft, put out a more definitive statement. It was the statement I would have liked to hear from CAYA.

 Statement From Prominent Pagan Groups

Picture
Matthews is very good at presenting herself as a charismatic holy woman however, she is a highly  manipulative, narcissistic abuser, a bigot and a transphobe who has destroyed many lives. I personally watched her interfere with coveners’ sobriety, mental health, jobs, finances, sexuality, family connections, love lives and marriages. She abused her power. She did sketchy things financially. Her dress, practices and entitlement smacked of cultural appropriation. She is a predator who preys on the vulnerable, people who have been marginalized, abused or have low self esteem. She had inappropriate relationships with those she was in a position of power over and did not respect boundaries or care about consent if she wanted something. She used both members and others in the pagan community to gain respectability, knowledge and prestige. When she was through or when they started to question her, she threw them under the bus and got her followers to drive it over them. Under her stewardship, CAYA Coven became nothing less than a cult. The things I observed were so horrible it's going to take a long time to process them. I thought I had done a lot of this already, since I left back in 2014, but I was wrong. Now, I feel that it's really important in addition to my own healing,  to support the survivors, refute the misinformation that is out there and do my best to make sure that the harm this woman does to new acolytes is minimal.

REVELATION!

Picture
I know I am putting a huge target on my back speaking out against this woman, but I think she is too dangerous to others, for me to stay silent, especially after other victims have spoken so bravely.

This will continue to be a lot to process. There is a reason I have been pulling the cards for myself personally that I have been: The Tower, Judgment, etc, or as you can see above, from my gorgeous new, Whispers of Lord Ganesha oracle deck, “Revelation!” So, even though I still have to deal with all of these things it's going to feel really good to get back into this discussion and introduce you to new tarot decks new interpretations ways of reading and talk about my passion.

I plan to write more about my experiences on my personal blog. For now, if you want to know more I am including links to public statements and the blogs of former members and students.

The Lovers - Incidental Tarot

Well, Hellooo there!

Picture
A friend of mine used to talk about the transition she made, every time a new Doctor would appear on Doctor Who. She would be devastated as The Doctor would be ready to regenerate. She would grieve for the loss of that love. Then the new actor would appear with a different look and different take on the character. At first it would be jarring and upsetting, "You’re not The Doctor I love. You aren’t right for this at all, I don’t think I am going to like you one bit!" She’d stick it out for a few episodes and then there would be a new moment of recognition, “Oh HELLO! I LIKE YOU!”

The lovers is all about that sudden intense recognition and passion. It doesn’t have to be about romantic love. It can be the passionate connection of a job that is the perfect fit, a friend who you can communicate with through a look, an exciting project. The lovers is about serendipity and perfect timing!

As Holly DeFount says, “The excitement and intensity of intertwining fates and passionate new relationships.

The Lovers in a word: PASSION.”

What is your newly discovered or kindled passion?

The downside of passion is becoming so full of it that you neglect everything else and have no perspective. Those who are totally ruled by their passions miss out on substance and can create a lot of drama. If you feel a bit too giddy, make sure to stop, take a step back and ground yourself.

A note: Since it is Valentine’s Day or as I was informed this morning if you are in Mexico, Feliz Día de Amor y Amistad! (Happy Love and Friendship Day!) I like that much better, it’s totally inclusive. And that includes self love as well. Unless you are a narcissist, self love may be the one we most often forget! Self love should absolutely be passionate. One of my favorite women, Mae West, once said when asked if she liked herself, “I don't like myself, I'm crazy about myself.” That feeling is what I wish for all of us!

If you want to read more about Holly’s thinking behind her Lovers card, you can do so here on her blog.

XIV Phoenix - Incidental Tarot

A Whole Lot of Shakin' Going On!

Picture

The Phoenix in the Incidental Tarot takes the place of what is, The Tower in more traditional decks.

I’ll just give you Holly’s words about her card, because they fit perfectly!

“The Phoenix represents destruction and demise, the necessary upheaval of old and crumbling systems. A trial by fire brings the burning away of falsity and self-destructive ends. Phoenix dares you to unearth the lies, root out false foundations before the Universe does it for you. The Phoenix in a word: CRUCIBLE.”

You may have noticed my blog posts disappeared for close a couple of weeks with no explanation. I’m sorry for that. I actually wrote posts for most of these days and I will try to go back and fill them in. I’ve been dealing with quite the storm lately. It’s been hurling a variety of emotional thunderbolts and physical hailstones for me to dodge. I had to run for cover and deal with practical things. I’m still in the melee, but I’ve regained a bit of footing. I am going to try my best to keep this rolling as I need some consistency in my life.

I had an immediate financial crisis that is resolved for now, thanks to the generous donations of friends and a spate of orders for readings. Blessed Be! I’m going to have to consider some serious fundraising to get my feet on stable ground, but this really saved me! I have so much gratitude. In addition I have been struggling with serious health issues for the past six months. I have MS, neuropathy and some other chronic conditions. On top of this a recent blood test found that I had extremely low levels of vitamin D. I hate the sun. I cut down on dairy at the advice of a nutritionist. Supplements are expensive so I haven't bought any in a year. And voila; here I am taking 50,000 IU of Vitamin D every week on top of a daily supplement. I’ve had a couple of doses. I’m still in pain and have no energy, but I hear it takes a while.

However the biggest distraction was the news that a spiritual group I used to belong to had finally woken up and expelled the abusive person at its helm. (Actually, she ran away before they could confront her) I was with this group for more than four years and observed so much narcissism, manipulation and abuse. No one would listen and any perceived criticism was dealt with harshly. I was harassed, bullied and shunned. Still. Others had much more egregious harm. I’m now able to talk about it. I’m finding out that people I was afraid to talk to because I thought they were still associated with this person had left shortly after I did. It’s quite a mess. There is a lot of healing to be done and I do not know if the organization can survive this.

No doubt all these things will make blogging and doing anything else, challenging, but I am going to try.

The tower is a shake-up, but it doesn’t always have to be. You can rise up stronger, wiser and even energized just like the phoenix!

Ansata Tarot - Strength

Don't Give Up! Find A Middle Way!

Picture
The Ansata Tarot is an unusual deck in some respects. It has only Major Arcana and the cards were created by artist, Paul Struck as a companion to a book by B.A. Mertz called, Astrologie and Tarot, which is long out of print. All of the cards correspond heavily to astrology and the readings in the booklet are are basically designed to cast a horoscope. The images in this deck are intriguing and haunting. They certainly have a surrealist style and some of them are quite detailed. The death card is stunning, but that’s not what I drew today.

In this deck Strength is number 11. She represents the astrological sign of Leo. The strength card is one I have long related to and this Strength is both unsettling and gorgeous. I have a hard time with figuring out who Struck was trying to represent. Durga, makes the most sense but the symbolism seems a little off. Perhaps she is an amalgamation of goddesses or just of Durga and Kali, who are really just different aspects of the same goddess after all. The booklet does not get into analyzing the art portion which is really strange considering all the symbolism he put into the deck.

Regardless, this Strength card is rather fierce and violent and yet at the same time peaceful. But that is what true strength is all about isn’t it, the perfect balance of brute force and calm confident control. The woman is naked so she is vulnerable, barely holding the lion’s mane yet she has tamed the Beast.  He has no more fight of his own, and yet together they are a force to be reckoned with. The heads around the lion’s neck would seem to attest to that. This symbolism, cutting off the heads is a message that one needs to cut the ego, to tame it. The lion, still snarling, looks like he has been through hell. He's scared, bloodied and emaciated. The Sun is is so close it has set the lion's mane on fire. This is really powerful imagery. What draws you in? What repulses you? Do you feel sorry for the lion? Do you identify with the woman? Does the sun feel powerful and exciting or do you fear getting burned?

One of the things that the strength card tells us is how important it is to strike a balance between the frenzied wild beast and serene energy. Wild power is obvious, but often quiet power is more commanding. It's a contrast. Finding a balance in all things is key. Finding joy in pleasure and raw sensuality while understanding the time and place to be perfectly civilized is a key lesson that many do not learn. Too passive and nothing is achieved, too angry and everyone retreats. Strength is not always about pushing through. Sometimes it's about knowing when to let go and be a little more zen about it. Sometimes being strong means shouting and fury and muscle, but much of the time true strength is shown with a gentle touch and a soft voice.

You may find yourself in a situation where you are sorely tested by loved ones or in the workplace. Before you lose your temper, take a step back. Would a cooler head be able to deal with the situation better? If you are feeling intimidated, do a check in. Do you need to let the lion out a little?  Act or react, your choice.  And even if things are really trying and it seems hopeless, remember, you  a survivor and will always find a way to get through adversity.

Rebirth - The Sacred Circle Tarot

It's A BRAND NEW DAY!

Picture
The Sacred Circle Tarot is a Celtic theme deck by pagan writer illustrator, Anna Franklin. Rebirth, takes the place of the traditional judgement card. The card shows a beautiful sunrise streaming through the silhouettes of barren trees. The card evokes the continuing cycle of life after death, renewal, then life once more. With the eternal spirit there is no true end

In contrast to the baron trees, at the top and bottom corners of the card holly is growing. holly, of course is an evergreen plant. (interesting fact: holly contains, theobromine, which is the chemical in chocolate that is toxic to cats and dogs.)

Perhaps it is time for a dramatic change in your thinking? Is it time to move on to a new phase in your life? Perhaps you've been stuck and are now feeling the energy to move forward with making decisions or bold changes. The things you have done in the past have brought you to the point of now. Things that may have not been clear now makes sense when you are able to look at the whole picture. You may have been through a rough journey but now you have come to a good place. Notice that the face of the sun is kind of a blank slate . The past is part of you, but now it's time for something new and fresh.

Chimera - Incidental Tarot

Picture
In the Incidental tarot the Chimera takes the place of the Devil card. She's beautiful and dangerous and seductive. In a word: TEMPTATION!

This is a perfect foil for yesterday's owl medicine card. While owl teaches you to be perceptive and cut through the night with the laser vision of truth, Chimera tempts you to allow yourself to be deceived, to enjoy the temporary pleasures of addiction, obsession and compulsion which will ultimately destroy you.

The chimera is a beautiful women, a fairy with butterfly wings, but she also has destructive talons and can destroy everything with her fire breathing tail. When you see the chimera for all she really is, you would be wise to pull back, even if it hurts, from whatever she represents that you are having a devil of a time letting go of: bad relationship (romantic, business, family, frenemy), destructive behavior, bad decisions, etc.

Judgement - The Medieval Cat Tarot

I've been suffering from migraines off and on all week and have slept through most of the weekend because of misery and migraine medication. I'm not a morning person anyway , however my schedule this week along with being so sick, have definitely made a card draw early in the day impossible. I think I've just resigned myself to the fact that whatever I'm going through lately means that all of my cards draws are going to happen in the late afternoon or even in the evening.

I always believe the message comes at the perfect time, however, if you would like to look at this as me drawing a card for your tomorrow, go for it. If you feel like this is a review or a commentary on the day you are having or is winding down, that works too. You can also go with the perfect timing message that this something you needed to know at this moment, that's also correct.

Today's card is Judgement from the Medieval Cat Tarot.

Honestly the imagery in this deck doesn't excite me all that much, but one of the things I do like is that it was designed to be read without reversals, taking the whole context of the card into consideration, something which I am a huge fan of. This tarot is by artist, Lawrence Teng provides an interesting blend of medieval Europe with elements of Chinese culture. In this card, the head adornments of the different cats seem to depict a blend of various cultures and religions.

I enjoy the cats in this card. Because it's simple, it gives you several clear opportunities of places to be drawn into the image which may give you more personal information. Do you identify with a particular cat for instance? Are you drawn to the trumpet? The clouds? The stars?

The huge golden disk of the sun behind the trumpet playing angel cat is like a giant halo. His eyes are closed as he plays the trumpet. One cat has her eyes closed in prayer while the other is looking directly at you. The small cat in the middle has his hands raised in blessing or perhaps he is directing a large chorus of angel cats. The stars that float in the foreground look like a meadow of flowers.

The judgement card comes up for us often after we have been through a time of struggle, a series of false starts or setbacks or a period of hard work filled with challenges. We may have been sidelined by grief, self-doubt, suffering, or feel as if we have been through some sort of trial. Basically, we've been through the shit and now it's time for a reckoning.

The reckoning is usually a positive one. The reward we reap may be recognition, personal growth or sudden progress. There is a glorious sunrise after a long dark night of the soul. Your hard work is going to pay off. You'll finally get some relief with a wonderful release of obstacles.

The Star - Daughters of the Moon Tarot

I thought I'd pull out something different that is kind of a treat because I rarely use this deck anymore. I've had it since the mid-80s. Remarkably, It's in close to pristine condition and I kind of want to keep it that way. This is a first edition black & white Daughters of the Moon Tarot, a feminist themed deck. It was designed so you could color tree images yourself, but I loved the black and white so I left it alone.

I believe there was a previous Incarnation from the 1970s and that was very popular with a different name. they now have a colored and a black and white deck available. the color deck has slightly different artwork.

The card for today is The Star. I love how this star is actually up floating above the Earth rather than with one toe in the water as she's often shown. However, even from up above the earth the water from her vessel is still flowing into the water below. Connecting and keeping the flow constant. She's in a peaceful state between two realms exchanging energy. She's clearly at peace, perhaps she's in deep meditation or in a dream state.

Sometimes we get so bogged down or invested in one thing that we become unbalanced and fail to see the connection between all things. The star reminds us to pull back rest and restore and let things flow. She also reminds us that when things look bleak or are frustrating, removing oneself from the frey can give you a different perspective and some hope!

The artist's webpage has a beautiful little poem on it with a picture of the colored card so you can see the difference in the artwork. I do not believe that I have the book for this anymore. :-( If I do it's in storage. I've kept the cards in a basket because of their weird shape and I used to have an original mother peace deck as well but I think that is gone. My sister gave me this deck and she's gone too so it means a lot to me.
